Concussion & Return2Play

Return2Play Pathway

At St George’s College student welfare, both on and off the sports field, is taken extremely seriously and after thorough research into the issue we have a comprehensive policy to ensure that if a student sustains a concussion at school, or while representing the School in a fixture, they receive the appropriate management. We meticulously follow cross-sport guidelines on the return to play process after a concussion including the requirement of assessment by a doctor and the undertaking of the Graduated Return to Play process (see document entitled ‘Return 2 Play Management Pathway’).

While there is good awareness of concussion in sports such as rugby, it is becoming increasingly apparent that they can also occur in other sports and, indeed, outside of sport. Following the release of the UK Government’s first cross-sport concussion guidance in April 2023, a number of sporting governing bodies have now updated their concussion protocols.

We will continue to use the services of Return2Play’s injury management system, which allows us to track and support students that suffer a head injury in or outside of sport at St George’s College. From September 2023, all students will be entered onto the Return 2 Play system.

In the event of a head injury or concussion, students can be provided with access to Return2Play’s doctors who have unrivalled expertise in the management of these injuries. Appointments can be made using their telemedicine service (webcam appointments) so can be done from home.

Full details of the Return2Play service, as well as terms & conditions and privacy policy, can be found at www.return2play.org.uk.
